What Does the Ofgem 10-Year Requirement Mean?
Under the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), meters and steam measuring equipment must be recalibrated or replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, or every 10 years, whichever comes sooner.
Where recalibration of an existing meter is not available or is not practical, replacement may be the appropriate route. We can help you identify a suitable new heat meter for the existing installation.

What Information Should You Send Us?
The quickest way for us to help is to send a clear photograph of the existing meter and its identification label. If possible, also provide the following information:
- Manufacturer and model
- Meter size and connection
- Nominal flow rate (qp)
- Body length
- Existing communication output
- Whether the meter is installed in the flow or return pipe
- Any Ofgem correspondence or replacement requirement you have received
Before the Existing Meter Is Removed
Ofgem's meter-replacement guidance requires participants to provide information and evidence relating to a replacement. Taking clear photographs and recording the old meter details before removal can make the amendment process much easier.
In particular, retain the existing meter's serial number and closing reading, and make sure the replacement meter's make, model, serial number, opening reading and installation date are recorded.
Remember to Notify Ofgem After Replacement
Ofgem states that Non-Domestic RHI participants have an ongoing obligation to notify them of changes to an accredited installation. A meter replacement should be notified by amending the RHI application on the RHI Register within 28 days of the change.
Ofgem may require supporting information including photographs, replacement details, readings, an installer declaration and, where applicable, an updated schematic. Always check the current Ofgem guidance for the requirements applying to your installation.
