Thermal Energy Meter Temperature Sensors

Accurate flow and return temperature measurement is essential for correct thermal energy calculation.

A heat or cooling energy meter calculates the amount of thermal energy transferred by measuring the flow rate of the energy-transfer medium together with the difference between the flow and return temperatures.

Two precision temperature sensors are therefore used: one measures the flow temperature and the second measures the return temperature. The difference between these two measurements is known as the temperature differential, or ΔT.

Correct sensor selection, installation and positioning are important to the accuracy of the complete thermal energy metering system.

Matched Temperature Sensor Pairs

Thermal energy meter temperature sensors are normally supplied as precision matched pairs.

The accuracy of a thermal energy meter depends not only on the individual temperature measurements but also on the accuracy of the difference between the two sensors.

This is particularly important where the temperature difference between the flow and return pipework is relatively small. Temperature sensors used with heat and cooling meters are therefore normally supplied and calibrated as matched sensor pairs.

Replacing Temperature Sensors

Where a sensor pair requires replacement, always confirm compatibility with the relevant energy meter. For approved thermal energy metering applications, sensor pairs should not be mixed or substituted without confirming the manufacturer's requirements.

Temperature Sensor Pockets

Sensor pockets provide a secure method of installing temperature sensors into heating and cooling pipework.

Temperature sensor pockets, sometimes referred to as thermowells, allow a temperature sensor to be positioned within the pipework while keeping the sensor itself isolated from the circulating medium.

Pockets are available in different lengths and connection sizes to suit different pipe diameters and installation arrangements. Selecting the correct immersion depth is important so that the sensor measures a representative temperature within the pipe.

Selecting a Sensor Pocket

  • Sensor diameter: Must suit the temperature sensor being installed
  • Pocket length: Selected according to pipe size and required immersion depth
  • Connection: Must match the threaded connection or fitting in the pipework
  • Meter compatibility: Check the energy meter manufacturer's requirements
  • Application: Confirm suitability for the system temperature and operating conditions

Correct Temperature Sensor Installation

Correct positioning of the flow and return sensors is essential for accurate energy measurement.

One temperature sensor is installed in the flow pipe and the second in the return pipe. The precise installation arrangement depends on the energy meter, whether the meter is installed in the flow or return pipe, and whether the system is measuring heating or cooling energy.

Always follow the relevant meter manufacturer's installation instructions, particularly where one of the temperature sensors is installed directly into the flow meter body.

Important – Temperature Sensor Cables

Do not cut, shorten or extend temperature sensor cables unless specifically permitted by the meter manufacturer. Altering the sensor cable may affect measurement accuracy and can compromise the approved configuration of the thermal energy metering system.
